Success is about being smart and dedicating time for not just work, but play and rest-time. We want to have fun — but not at the expense of our results. And we don’t want to work at the expense of our fun. Equally, without rest neither work nor play can be sustained long term.
Our mojo is that special magic that keeps us moving forward and bouncing back after a setback. Sustain your mojo by creating a healthy combination of work, rest and play driven by a sense of purpose. We must take well-deserved time out if we are to maintain our mojo.
In 2014, I was so grateful for a special holiday when I travelled with my family, my mum and dad and my brother and sister’s families. We saw the house in Chios where my father was born and got to embrace the culture in authentic Greek style. Holiday experiences can create lifelong memories — the action, the down time and all the meaningful connections with what matters. Of course when you return from a good holiday (good being one where you did holiday and not work) you are recharged in both body and mind and ready to go again.
Taking time off is essential. The absolute minimum should be one full week every three months – ideally 2 weeks per quarter. In all my years of leading others I always send hard working, dedicated and ambitious people off on holidays, as I know that this is one of the keys to their success.
When was the last time you had a proper holiday? It’s easy, I know, to make excuses about why we can’t, but True Believers don’t make excuses and they respect the importance of time out to look after themselves and their relationships.
